The frame is what people see. The lens is what you see through. Choose in this order: power and distance first, material and thickness second, coatings last. Jumping straight to “blue cut” or “thin lens” is how people pay for extras that do not match the job.

Step 1: Match the lens type to the job

Single-vision distance — one power for far (board, road, general wear).

Single-vision reading — one near power. Fine for a book or phone; blurry across a room. Do not drive in reading-only glasses.

Non-prescription (plano) — no power. Used when you want a frame for style or a coating only.

Bifocal — distance on top, near at the bottom, with a visible line. Currently shown in Select Lenses around Rs 4,000 (confirm; it can change). Useful if you want a hard switch and do not mind the line.

Step 2: Choose material and index (thickness)

In practice you are choosing impact, weight, and edge thickness.

Standard plastic (often CR-39, index around 1.50) — clear and economical for mild prescriptions. Heavier and easier to crack than polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate — lighter, much more impact-resistant, with inherent UV blocking in the material. A common recommendation for children, rimless drill-mounts, and active wear. Step 3: Add coatings for how you actually live

Coatings are optional lines in Select Lenses. Confirm the figures on the frame you choose; they can change.

• Anti-reflective (AR) — around Rs 1,500 — indoor lights, night glare, clearer photos. AR coating guide.

Scratch-resistant hard coats are often already on modern plastic lenses; still clean with a rinse and a microfibre cloth, not a dry shalwar hem.

The correct type is the one that matches distances in your prescription — distance, near, or both. Coatings cannot change that. If you are unsure, take this page to your optometrist rather than guessing ADD or computer power.

Which lens material is best in Pakistan’s heat?
